AYC Celebrates 30 Years – Former Owner Dan Meyer Reminisces
As the days get warmer, longer and sunnier, it is fun to reminisce about Anacortes Yacht Charters first 30 years. Beyond its on-going commitment to provide topnotch boats at terrific rates, AYC continues to evolve boat-keeping and customer service systems that set the bar for the industry.
In 1989 Dan and Sherrie Meyer purchased the business from Jim Shay, who ran the company its first decade as a fairly casual, family-run venture. Dan notes that one of the most important changes he and Sherrie made during their 17-year-watch at AYC was to change the checkout system. Instead of using seasonal help that tried to manage 100 boats, the Meyers developed a team of competent boat handlers who were responsible for 10 boats each. As a result, the professional handlers knew their boats well and could advise clients through highly effective and efficient checkouts and check-ins.
"Instead of a shotgun approach, we developed a more refined approach to handling checkouts and check-ins," says Dan. "As the process evolved it made a huge reduction in the number of service calls. We became proactive and we were able to resolve fires before they combusted, adding to AYC's credibility and our charter guests' satisfaction."

Opening Day – Start Your Engines or Set Sail This Spring
Seattle Yacht Club's Opening Day on May 2 heralds the start of boating season, so it's time to start your engines or set sail. And the earlier the better because spring boating offers many advantages, especially for those who appreciate quiet marinas, loads of wildlife, beautiful spring weather and unpopulated anchorages. Also look for the orcas' return to the San Juan Islands! www.ayc.com
